Raiders suffer setback at No. 30 Georgia State

ATLANTA – Middle Tennessee freshman Tom Moonen claimed a singles victory at the No. 2 spot against No. 30 Georgia State in a match-tiebreak, but the Blue Raiders fell to the Panthers by a score of 6-1.
The Panthers earned the first point in the match by winning at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, as well as No. 2 doubles, 6-4. Miguel Negre Fernandez and Gian Issa were unable to finish their doubles match at No. 3, but the duo of Blue Raiders were leading 5-3 at the stoppage of play.
Georgia State earned straight-set wins at No. 1, 3, 4 and 5 to clinch the victory, followed by a win in a match tiebreak at No. 6 after Max Rauch pushed the match to the deciding set due to a 6-4 second set win.
Moonen got off to a quick start in his match with a 6-3 first set win, but suffered a setback in the second set, 3-6. In the match tiebreak, Moonen won 10-6, to put the Blue Raiders on the scoreboard.
MT will travel to California next week for matchups against Pacific and Cal Poly. The Blue Raiders have six road matches remaining on this extended road swing before competing in the MT Shootout at the Adams Tennis Complex March 31-April 2 against South Alabama, Valpo and UAB.
The 2017 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship will also be held at the ATC April 21-23.
