MT seeks to stay atop league race
NORFOLK, Va. — With three weekends remaining in regular season play, Middle Tennessee travels to Old Dominion for a key league matchup Thursday night.
Action from Constant Convocation Center tips at 6 p.m. and can be heard on 89.5 WMOT with Dick Palmer on the call. Fans can also catch the beIN Sports stream online at beinsportsconnect.tv.
The Blue Raiders (14-8, 9-2) lead the all-time series by a 4-2 margin against the Monarchs (12-10, 7-4). Both teams split a pair of games last season, with MT claiming a 70-54 victory to capture the 2016 conference tournament championship.
Alex Johnson and Ty Petty continue their dominant play in league games, averaging 23.3 and 20 points per game, respectively. Petty averaged 23.5 points, 7.5 assists and five rebounds during a pair of Lady Raiders wins last weekend to stay atop the league standings.
Old Dominion has won four straight games after sweeping its trip to the Sunshine State against FIU and Florida Atlantic last weekend.
The Monarchs are paced by Jennie Simms, who leads the league in scoring and is second in NCAA with 25.8 points per game. Simms tallied 72 points last weekend to gain Player of the Week honors from the league office, USBWA and NCAA Starting Five.
Thursday's matchup will showcase premier talent that includes the top two scorers in the conference (Simms and Johnson), and three of the top five scorers (Simms, Johnson, Petty).
Simms and Petty are also the only players in the conference to garner National Player of the Week honors this season, and the duo appear in the top 100 NCAA rankings more than any other players in conference history.
Following Thursday's game, MT will close the week at Charlotte with a battle for first place on the line. Saturday's tip is set for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
