Game 1 – UTEP 7, MT 6 | Box Score
The Miners took an early lead in game one, scoring in the bottom of the first. A Raider throwing error gave the Miners a base runner. A single through the left side moved her over to third base and then she crossed the plate on a ground out to second.
UTEP added three more runs in the bottom of the second. Two singles to start the inning were brought around on a home run by Kaitlin Ryder to give the Miners a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Miners again started with back-to-back singles and then a bunt single to load the bases. UTEP scored three runs to push out to a 7-0 lead with the first run coming on a single to right and two more were scored on a double to left center.
After stranding runners at third twice in the top of the second, the Raiders got on the board in the top of the sixth.
Precious Birdsong reached first with a leadoff single and then stole second. She came around to score on a single up the middle from Morgan Harris. Harris then stole second and moved to third on a single up the middle from Samantha Vacko. Danielle Munoz sent a sacrifice fly to right to bring Harris home.
The Raiders made a game of it in the top of the seventh, down 7-2. Keely McGee got the rally started on a single to left center. Birdsong then singled through the right side, followed by Harris hitting an RBI double to right field. Munoz then hit into an infield fly in which the Raiders managed to score on, cutting the Miner lead to 7-4.
Then with two outs, Kirstyn Cuccia sent a hard hit ball at the shortstop that was mishandled allowing the Raiders to score two on the play, making it 7-6. The rally was cut short as MT grounded out to end the game.
Cori Jennings took the loss in the circle moving to 5-7 on the year, she struck out two. Megan Chocallo also saw time, striking out two in two innings of work.
Game 2 – MT 5, UTEP 2 | Box Score
The Raiders got on the board first in game two, scoring two in the top of the second.
Kaylyn Slatter got aboard with one out after being hit by a pitch. She came around to score on a triple into the corner of left field off the bat of Kristin Uselton. McGee then singled right center to bring Uselton across for a 2-0 lead.
UTEP came back in the bottom of the third. A single through the left side and a bunt single put two on with no outs for the Miners. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners up 60 feet and then a single off the bat of Ryder scored two to tie the game at two apiece.
At that point, Gretchen Greer came into pitch in relief and ended the Miner rally with a fly out to center and ground out to second.
The game remained tied, 2-2, until Middle added three runs in the top of the sixth. Munoz hit a double off the wall in right field. Up next, Lexi Cushing waited on a change and sent it back up the middle to score a run. Then Uselton lifted a ball over the fence in left for her second home run of the year, to give the Raiders a 5-2 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Miners got two hits to put runners on the corners but the Raiders were able to force a fly out to centerfield to take the 5-2 win.
Greer got the win in the circle to move to 4-2 on the year. She struck out five.
Uselton went 2-for-3 with three RBI in the game while McGee was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk.
The Raiders return to the field for a single game against UTEP tomorrow, Sunday March 19 at noon MST/1pm CST.
