EL PASO, Texas – The Middle Tennessee softball team returned to Helen of Troy Softball Field for the series finale of a conference matchup with UTEP. An offensively heavy game, the two teams amassed a conference-high 25 hits and 17 runs with the Miners taking the game 10-7 over the Raiders. MT moves to 10-13, 1-5 while UTEP improves to 7-19, 2-4.
The Raiders got out to a quick start in the contest, scoring five in the first frame.
Samantha Vacko got the rally started by reaching on an error by the shortstop. She moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a double to left center off the bat of Summer Burgess. Up next, Morgan Harris smoked a ball over the wall in left field for her first homer of the season to give MT a 3-0 lead.
Kristin Uselton then added two more to the Raider lead on a hit to left field after Danielle Munoz and Lexi Cushing reached on singles. MT held a 5-0 advantage before UTEP even had a chance to bat.
However, the Miners came back in the bottom of the first inning, getting two aboard with one out following a walk and a single to left. Then Pamala Baber hit a double to left center to cut the MT lead to 5-2.
In the bottom of the second UTEP tied the game at five apiece. The Miners recorded four singles, a fielder's choice and took advantage of a Raider infield error to score three runs. Megan Chocallo recorded a strikeout in the inning to cut the Miners momentum and get out of the jam.
UTEP took the lead in the bottom of the third. The Miners recorded a single to left, a fielder's choice and then another single from pinch hitter Macey Brown to score one. In the next at bat, the Miners hit a sacrifice fly to take a 7-5 lead. Cori Jennings struck out the final batter to end the frame.
The Miners added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Three consecutive singles gave UTEP a 9-5 advantage. With two outs, the Miners then recorded another single down the right field line to make it 10-5.
The Raiders were able to get a few back in the top of the fifth as they got the bases loaded. Munoz singled to right field, Cushing doubled to the wall in right and then Kirstyn Cuccia was walked. The Miners then changed pitchers and Uselton followed by ripping a shot back up the middle for an RBI single making it 10-6.
Making an appearance as a pinch hitter, Austyn Whaley was walked to bring a run across to cut the Miner lead to three, 10-7.
In the top of the seventh, Cushing lead off with a single but the Miners turned a doubleplay to put the Raiders away and take the 10-7 win and the series, 2-1.
Chocallo took the loss in the circle, moving to 0-3. She struck out one in the effort. Jennings struck out two in her time in the circle.
Cushing went 3-for-4 in the game while Uselton was 2-for-4 with a team-high three RBI.
