Raiders Stumble in 7-4 Loss at TSU

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team traveled to Nashville for a midweek contest at Tennessee State. The Raiders fell in the game, 7-4, to move to 10-14 on the year.
The Tigers started the scoring in the bottom of the second. Back-to-back errors put two on with two outs. Then, a single to right field loaded the bases. Up next, Selena Crafton chopped a single up the middle to score a run. A hit by pitch followed to let a run across and finally a single through the left side off the bat of Danica Gleason made it 3-0.
The Raiders got one back in the top of the third. With two outs, Precious Birdsong beat out a bunt and then stole second. Samantha Vacko recorded the RBI as she hit a ball up the middle, cutting the Tiger lead to 3-1.
The score remained at 3-1 until the Raiders tied the game at three apiece in the top of the sixth.
Summer Burgess singled up the middle with one out followed by Austyn Whaley getting walked. Then Lexi Cushing hit a fly ball to right and the fielder dropped it, allowing both MT base runners to score.
The tie was short lived as the Tigers broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the sixth.
The Tigers loaded the bases with one out. The first base runner reached on an error, the second on a single to left and the third on a bunt single. Sarah Snell then singled up the middle to score two runs followed by Kim Trice hitting a double to the wall in right center to give TSU a 7-4 advantage.
In the top of the seventh the Raiders made a run at a comeback as Kristin Uselton reached on an error. Lauren Payne then came into pinch run and on two grounds outs came around to score. However, the Raiders were unable to cover the deficit, falling 7-4.
Cori Jennings took the loss in the circle, moving to 5-8. She struck out two. Megan Chocallo picked up one strikeout in 0.1 innings of relief. Despite the seven runs given up in the game, none of them were earned, keeping the Raider pitching staff's season ERA intact, at 2.56.
Middle will be back in action as they host Florida International in a three game series beginning Friday at 7pm. The other two games will be played on Saturday and Sunday with game times to be determined by weather.
