Softball to Host FIU This Weekend

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team hosts (RV) FIU in a three game conference series this weekend. The first game is slated for Friday, March 24 at 7pm. A doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday, March 25 beginning at 11am, weather permitting. The Raiders enter the series at 10-14, 1-5 while the Panthers are 26-6, 3-0.
FIU holds an all-time record of 43-16 over the Raiders including sweeping MT in last season's conference series by scores of 9-1, 7-1 and 6-3. Middle last defeated FIU in the 2015 season, 7-6.
The last time the two sides met was MT's season finale. The game was held in Miami, Fla. with the Panthers winning 6-3.
FIU started the scoring by Gabby Spallone stealing home in the bottom of the second. Corinne Jenkins also sent a two-run homer over the fence in the frame to make it 3-0. In the third, Stephanie Texeira doubled to drive in a run and then two batters later Aleima Lopez singled to score Texeira, giving FIU a 5-0 edge.
Middle Tennessee's offense got started in the fourth as Megan Griffith led off with a base hit and Austyn Whaley followed with her sixth home run of the 2016 season. Then, with two outs, Precious Birdsong singled to bring home Deja Portillo and the Raiders cut the Panther lead to 5-3.
FIU finished the game with Lauren Williams hitting a single through the left side to make It a 6-3 win for the Panthers.
The Raiders are coming off a 7-4 loss to Tennessee State yesterday. Summer Burgess went 2-for-3 in the contest with a double.
On the year MT is led at the plate by Birdsong, who is hitting .439, ranking in the top five in the conference. She also has a team-high 14 stolen bases, tied for sixth-best in C-USA.
Burgess, Morgan Harris and Keely McGee are all hitting above .300 on the year. Burgess has a team-leading seven doubles to go with seven RBI. Harris has 10 RBI after hitting her first home run of the season last weekend at UTEP. McGee has eight RBI on the year to go with four doubles and two homers.
In the circle, Cori Jennings has seen the majority of the time, pitching 80 innings over the 24 games so far this season. She has 49 strikeouts with just 11 walks, the least amount of walks given up by any pitcher with 70 or more innings of work in the conference.
FIU comes into the series receiving votes in the most recent national poll. Texeira was also most recently named C-USA Player of the Week while freshman pitcher Shannon Saile got the Pitcher of the Week nod last week.
The Panthers went 4-0 last week, sweeping their conference opening series with North Texas by scores of 8-3, 2-1 and 1-0. Prior to that, FIU defeated Fairfield 10-3 in a midweek contest. The Panthers will also play the rare Thursday contest, hosting Jacksonville this evening.
Texeira led the team with three extra-base hits during last week's action. She hit a .500 for the week while putting together a 1.125 slugging percentage. Among league leaders in 2017, Texeira leads the way in on-base percentage (.537) and walks (24). Her 32 RBI rank second while her seven home runs are tied for fourth-most in C-USA.
In addition, Texeira also boasts a .400 batting average for the season, second-highest on the team behind Jackie Schoff. Schoff is hitting .458 on the year, ranking her second amongst C-USA batters. Kasandra Castle and Jessica Rivera come into the game as RBI leaders with 33 and 27, respectively, all top-five marks in the conference.
As a team, FIU leads the conference in on-base percentage (.401), runs (190), hits (263), RBI (153), sac bunts (27) and sac flies (nine).
In the circle the Panthers are also some of the conference's best. As a staff, Megan Kugelmann, Abby Summers and Shannon Saile lead the C-USA in ERA (1.74), opposing batting average (.207), batters struck out (206), runs (66) and earned runs (53) allowed, wins (26), and saves (five).
