MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team opened up a three game home stand with (RV) FIU on Friday night, March 24. The tight matchup saw the Panthers hang on and defeat the Raiders, 3-0. MT moves to 10-15, 1-6 on the year while FIU is now 28-6, 4-0.
FIU jumped out to lead in the top of the first. A leadoff walk followed by a stolen base put a runner in scoring position for the Panthers. The runner advanced to third on a ground out and scored by stealing home as another play stole second base.
In the bottom of the second the Raiders got a leadoff base runner as Morgan Harris reached on a drop pop up. She made her way to third via a sacrifice bunt from Austyn Whaley and tagging up on a deep fly ball off the bat of Danielle Munoz. However, the Raiders were unable to push the run across.
MT had other chances to get on the board in the game. In the bottom of the third and fifth, the Raiders got runners out to first and second on hits by Precious Birdsong and Kristin Uselton but were just shy of pushing that crucial run across.
The Panthers cushioned their lead in the top of the seventh. Sammi Green singled up the middle to start the inning. Then with two outs, FIU got two infield singles to load the bases. The Raiders then made an infield error on a grounder that allowed two runs to score, making it 3-0. MT was able to halt the rally by catching a base runner in a run down at third base.
In the bottom of the seventh, Keely McGee reached on a dropped pop up bunt and advanced to second as Birdsong walked. However, FIU pitcher, Shannon Saile, recorded her eighth strikeout of the night to secure the 3-0 win for the Panthers.
Summer Burgess recorded MT's other hit in the game, held to just three.
Cori Jennings recorded the loss to move to 5-9 on the year despite striking out six in the game.
FIU and MT return to the Blue Raider Softball Field tomorrow, Saturday, March 25 for a scheduled doubleheader starting at 11am.
