Austin Peay seals victory in 101st minute
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A valiant effort by the Blue Raiders fell just short as in-state rival Austin Peay stole a 2-1 double overtime win in Murfreesboro Sunday night. The Governors scored in the 101st minute to end the contest and spoil Middle Tennessee's home opener in front of a crowd of 836 Blue Raider fans.
The scoring got started early when an unlucky bounce off a blocked Governor shot fell to the feet of another Governor attacker and was slotted into the back of the net in the third minute.
Amber Hoot had the first Blue Raider shot of the night in the 14th minute on an effort that sailed wide from just outside the box. Several more Blue Raider shots came in the ensuing minutes before Peyton DePriest was able to equalize in the 26th minute.
The defenses began to settle in for both sides after the equalizer with shots limited the remainder of the first half. Austin Peay began to create some chances in the second half as the Blue Raider attack slowed, but Middle Tennessee's defense stood strong and carried the Raiders through regulation and the first overtime tied up at 1-1.
Just 49 seconds into the second half, the Governors were able to seal the win with a sudden death goal by junior F McKenzie Dixon.
Quotable
"I think we had a good overall game. Austin Peay was a good, strong team and I think anybody could have won this game. We just need to keep the ball a little better and I think if we do that we can get our front players including Peyton (DePriest) in greater scoring positions." – HC Aston Rhoden
