Lady Raiders get back on track at UTSA
1/11/2018 1:38:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Louro's 15 leads three in double figures
SAN ANTONIO – Middle Tennessee combined efficient offense with its trademark strong defense to get back on track with a 62-47 triumph at UTSA here Thursday.
Jess Louro found her shooting touch and led three Lady Raiders in double figures with 15 points, followed by Anna Jones and Abbey Sissom with 11 each as Middle Tennessee improved to 9-7 overall and notched its first C-USA win in three tries.
"Overall, I was pleased with the effort and attitude of our team to start this road trip," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "It is never easy on the road and it is always tough to win here. I'm proud of the way our team responded, but we need to build on this. My whole thing is that our team continues to get better and improve throughout this conference season to give ourselves a chance to win the conference tournament."
The 62 points scored matched the most for Middle Tennessee in its last seven games and all but one Lady Raider who saw action scored. Gabby Lon added eight points and eight rebounds, while Rebecca Reuter finished with six points and four rebounds.
Middle Tennessee entered the game 27th nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 56 points per game, and held its six opponent of the season to less than 50 points in the process. The Lady Raiders held UTSA to 39 percent (16-of-41) shooting from the field, and they did not surrender a 3-point field goal.
The game also marked the Lady Raider debut of freshman Kara Meadows, who suffered an ankle injury during preseason and had been sidelined since. The Class A Miss Basketball provided four points in five minutes of action.
Middle Tennessee controlled the game from the outset but was not able to put it away until the fourth quarter when they shot 50 percent (7-of-14). UTSA started strong and led 9-2 in the early going but the Lady Raiders closed the opening quarter on a 13-0 run to take a 15-9 lead. From there, they would never trail although the game wasn't decided until the final stanza.
Louro's hot shooting was instrumental as the Lady Raiders pulled away. Louro's game-high 15 points included a sizzling 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc. She also added five rebounds. Sissom also added two 3-pointers.
The steady play of Jones, an improving freshman guard who has showed tremendous poise in her debut campaign. Jones was solid all around with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including two 3s, to go with three rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal. Her play late in the third quarter helped Middle Tennessee pull away when she scored five straight points and added a steal in a 30-second spurt.
Middle Tennessee will look to complete a sweep of the road trip when it plays at UTEP Saturday at 1 p.m.
