Raiders host Austin Peay and Chattanooga on Monday
Match Notes
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee's men's tennis team begins the 2018 season with a doubleheader Monday at the Adams Tennis Complex against a pair of in-state foes, Austin Peay and Chattanooga.
"This weekend I'm looking for a lot of fire and intensity from our doubles teams," MT head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "We have been doing a great job of it in practice, and I expect it to carry over into match play. Some of our guys have not competed since October, so this will be good chance to get back into the competitive swing of things."
The Blue Raiders returned all eight student athletes from last year's team and added senior transfer Jan Porteset and freshman Chris Edge. The pair of newcomers combined for a singles record of 14-8 and a doubles mark of 15-9 in the fall season.
Austin Peay will square off against the Blue Raiders at 11 a.m. on Monday for their first meeting against MT since 2016. MT is currently on a 20-match win streak against the Govs and leads the all-time series, 31-7. The Blue Raiders and Govs met at the ATC in September for a hidden dual, and MT claimed all six singles matches and two of three doubles matches.
For the fifth consecutive year, MT opens the first day of the spring season with a match against Chattanooga. Chuck Merzbacher took over as head coach of the Mocs after spending five years at Minnesota as head women's tennis coach. Chattanooga returns four student athletes that competed against the Blue Raiders in last year's 7-0 loss at the ATC.
Free food sponsored by Jason's Deli and free shirts will be available while it lasts at the Adams Tennis Complex as the Blue Raiders take on Austin Peay and Chattanooga. Admission is free to every Middle Tennessee event at the Adams Tennis Complex.
