MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – In wins against UAB and Alabama State, four members of Middle Tennessee's men's tennis team earned two singles wins in a doubleheader on Sunday, moving MT's record to 4-1.
The Blue Raiders faced their first Conference USA opponent of the year in UAB, and MT came out on top, 5-2. The Blazers claimed the doubles point by winning at No. 1 and 3. Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore and Miguel Negre Fernandez were up 5-3 at No. 2 but were unable to finish their match.
"I feel good about coming away with the win, but we're also coming away with some things we can do better on," MT head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "I wasn't thrilled with the energy we came out with, but we had a little talk after the doubles, and the guys came out with a lot more fire."
MT bounced back from its first doubles point loss of the year by taking the first five singles matches to finish. Chris Edge was first off the courts with a 6-1, 6-2 score at No. 4, followed by Negre on court three, 6-4, 6-0. Morell put MT up in the match, 3-0, with his straight set win at No. 2, and Gian Issa clinched the win on court five by a score of 6-4, 6-3.
Two matches saw a third set against UAB. Max Rauch outlasted his opponent at the bottom of the lineup, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. UAB closed out the match and earned their second point by winning at the top spot, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Against Alabama State later in the day, MT got off to a good start by claiming the doubles point with quick wins at No. 1 and 2. Issa again clinched the win, and all Blue Raiders wrapped up their matches in straight sets, making the final score against the Hornets, 7-0.
"Gian as a senior is getting it done. Every time I turn my head, he's up a break, he's getting into his match, he's controlling his match with his serve and groundstrokes," Borendame added. "It's awesome to see him play with a lot more confidence."
The Blue Raiders will be back at the Adams Tennis Complex on Jan. 28 against UTSA and Tennessee State, with action starting at 11 a.m.
