MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – On the final match day in the first month of the 2018 season, Middle Tennessee men's tennis took down Conference USA foe UTSA, 5-2, and in-state opponent TSU, 7-0.
The first match of the day kicked off with the Blue Raiders getting the best of UTSA on doubles courts one and three. Tom Moonen and Chris Edge cruised to a 6-1 win, followed by Gian Issa and Nicolas Buitrago Machado at No. 3, 6-3.
"We had to flip some things around in doubles this week. We put Gian in for doubles, and he executed well today. Nicolas executed today for us as well," MT head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "We usually just do one day a week in doubles, and we try to make that a very high-energy day. They're playing pretty well and staying sharp in doubles."
Moonen and Buitrago won their singles matches in straight sets to give MT a 3-0 lead over the Roadrunners. After UTSA got on the board with a win on court four, Issa clinched the MT win with a 6-3, 6-4 performance at No. 5. The Roadrunners got their second point with a win on court three. Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore earned a three-set win at No. 2 to cap off the 5-2 victory.
In doubles against TSU, Morell paired with Miguel Negre Fernandez to blank their opponents on court two, 6-0. Moonen and Edge clinched the doubles point at No. 1, 6-2.
Luis Morillo Diaz started the singles action with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over the Tigers in his first dual match of the season, and the rest of the Blue Raiders won their matches in straight sets to close out a 7-0 sweep of TSU.
The Blue Raiders will be on the road for two matches next weekend before returning to the Adams Tennis Complex on Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. vs. Indiana.
"We still haven't gotten to a spring dual match yet where we've had all the guys healthy, so we're looking forward to having everybody out there and see what we can do because I think we still have another level," Borendame added.
