MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee men's tennis traveled outside the state of Tennessee for the first time in the 2018 dual match season and came back to Murfreesboro with wins over George Washington and St. John's.
"This was two solid wins on the road, and I'm proud of the effort and energy by our guys," MT head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "I am most proud of our maturity and ability to handle adversity. We are looking forward to getting home and back to work to prepare for Indiana."
On Friday morning against the Colonials, the Blue Raiders jumped to a 1-0 lead in the match with doubles wins at No. 1 and 3. Tom Moonen and Chris Edge combined for a 6-1 triumph on court one, followed by Max Rauch and Nicolas Buitrago Machado at No. 3, 6-1.
In singles action, Moonen won at the top spot in the lineup in three sets, and the rest of the MT lineup won their matches in straight sets to complete a 7-0 sweep of George Washington in their first match of the weekend.
MT then traveled to New York to take on St. John's on Saturday night. Moonen and Edge again came away with a doubles win, and Miguel Negre Fernandez paired with Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore to clinch the doubles point over the Red Storm.
St. John's earned singles wins on courts one and three, but MT won in straight sets on the remaining four courts to make the final score 5-2. Gian Issa, Morell, Edge and Rauch all came away with two singles in the road trip.
The Blue Raiders will be back at the Adams Tennis Complex on Friday at 6 p.m. for a match against Indiana.
