Lady Raiders show grit in first road win

Come from 12 down to win by seven
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Middle Tennessee answered its first road test by displaying some big-time moxie with a riveting 78-71 comeback victory against Furman Sunday afternoon.
Playing its second game in less than 48 hours, Middle Tennessee (2-0) trailed by 12, 57-45, with 4:09 remaining in the third quarter, but showed tremendous poise and determination to stun the Paladins (1-1) on their home court.
"This was a game where you see what you are made of," said sophomore Anna Jones, who scored 13 points and pulled five rebounds. "Everyone did their job. Everyone contributed. There was no panic."
Middle Tennessee outscored Furman, 23-14, in the final 14 minutes of the game to turn the 12-point deficit into a convincing seven-point win. The turnaround was led by an array of Lady Raiders who made winning plays.
Freshman Taylor Sutton certainly didn't play like a rookie in her second start of the season. The Atlanta, Ga., native poured in 18 points of 6-of-6 shooting from 3-point range to lead five Lady Raiders in double figures.
Jones contributed 13 points and had a team-high five rebounds, while newcomer A'Queen Hayes was solid once again with 13 points and four rebounds. Hayes scored nine of her 13 in the comeback while also providing airtight defense to help swing momentum. In fact, it was Hayes that hit the last big field goal when she buried her only trey of the game with three minutes remaining to push the lead to five after Furman had closed to within 65-63.
Alex Johnson added 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting, including 10 clutch points in the second half, while Jess Louro scored seven of her 10 in the rally.
"I'm pretty proud of them," Head Coach Rick Insell said. "They could have quit and given up down 12 more than halfway through the third quarter, but they didn't. We kept battling. We kept playing hard. We had some players step up and make some winning plays. What a great way to start the season this weekend."
Middle Tennessee didn't get to the free-throw line but when the results were outstanding when they did, especially in the clutch. Middle Tennessee was eight-of-eight from the charity stripe in the final 23 seconds to hold Furman at bay. The Lady Raiders were 10-of-10 from the line in the fourth quarter and 12-of-13 for the game.
The Lady Raiders had another stellar shooting performance from beyond the arc. They connected on 39 percent (10-of-26) of their 3-pointers with Sutton leading the way with six. Middle Tennessee shot 50 percent (28-of-56) from the field overall.
Middle Tennessee will be back in action when it plays Tennessee Tech in Cookeville Friday night.
