Blue Raiders finish 7th out 22 in Kiawah
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Middle Tennessee wrapped up the fall season Tuesday with a round of 6-over par 294 to finish 23-over par (300-293-294=887) and in seventh place out of 22 teams at the East Bay Deli Classic in Kiawah Island.
"I thought we had a solid week at Kiawah," Head Coach Mark McEntire said. "We struggled with the fourth score but I'm really happy with the play of Tanner (Owens) and James (Beckner)."
Owens and Beckner led the way for the Blue Raiders on the final day, each firing a 1-under 71 on the final day to land themselves a Top 10 spot individually.
Owens, who turned in a career-low 54-hole total of 4-under par 212 (71-70-71) finished fifth in the field of over 100 golfers to collect the first Top 5 finish of his career. The Milton, Tenn., native and Blackman High School product was one of only six golfers in the field to finish the event under par.
"Tanner has had a tremendous fall and I'm glad he was able to cap it off with a Top 5 finish," McEntire stated.
Beckner just missed out on joining Owens on the short list of under par finishers, logging and even par 216 (72-73-71) on the week to land two spots back of his teammate in seventh place individually.
"James played very well this week," McEntire added. "He was in positon every round and just wasn't able to finish quite as strong as he needed to."
Freshman Palmer Sadlowski turned in a solid performance as well, finishing the week at Turtle Point tied for 35th at 8-over par (76-73-75=224). Senior Graham Gosselin tied for 89th individually while freshman Jake Marvelli finished tied for 97th.
In order to reach their seventh place team finish, the Blue Raiders ranked fifth in the field in Par 5 scoring (-15, 4.75), sixth in Par 4 scoring (+45, 4.30) and birdies (45), and tied for seventh in pars (154).
The Blue Raider must now wait out the winter before returning to the course on Feb. 11 at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational in St. George, Utah.
"We have some good things to work on this offseason and this finish will give us some confidence moving forward," McEntire said.
