Johnson's 17 leads way for MT
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Middle Tennessee's five-game road winning streak was snapped in a 65-58 loss to UAB here Thursday.
The Lady Raiders (16-11, 8-6) played good enough defense, holding the Blazers below their season scoring average and limiting them to less than 40 percent shooting from the field overall, and just 23 percent from beyond 3-point range.
Middle Tennessee's problem was mustering enough offense to secure the road win against UAB (22-4, 11-2), which moved into a tie with WKU for the top spot in C-USA.
Alex Johnson led Middle Tennessee with 17 points and posted five rebounds. Jess Louro finished with 11 points and five rebounds, while Abbey Sissom and Rebecca Reuter supplied nine points each. Reuter had a team-best six rebounds.
"You have to give UAB credit," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "Coach (Randy) Norton has done a really good job and his team played hard and executed today. We just didn't do enough offensively to get the win, but UAB's defense had something to do with that. Defensively, we played pretty good, but not good enough."
The game was nip-and-tuck throughout. The score was tied 21-21 at the intermission after a slow-paced first half. The difference was really in the waning minutes of the third quarter. UAB led 30-29 with 4:05 remaining in the frame but the Blazers used a 9-1 run over the next three minutes to push their lead to eight – their largest of the game to that point.
The Lady Raiders battled in the final quarter, putting up 25 points, but they could never get closer than five in the final frame.
Middle Tennessee will close out the road portion of the regular season when it face Charlotte Sunday at noon.
