MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team easily defeated Rhode Island at home on Wednesday night. The Blue Raiders had a big seven run third inning on their way to a 10-1 victory over the Rams. With the win, MT is now 18-8 on the year.

Gretchen Greer got the complete game win, striking out four. She got her first two strikeouts on the first two batters of the game.

Despite the win, Rhode Island got the board first. The Rams got two runners on base with back-to-back doubles. Then a single up the middle from Paige Julich put Rhode Island ahead, 1-0. Greer picked up her third strikeout of the game to end the Ram's rally.

The Blue Raiders got the run, and two more in the top of the second. With two outs, Kirstyn Cuccia walked and came around to tie up the game on a single from Keely McGee and a wild pitch. Summer Burgess picked up her first RBI of the night on a double down the left field line. Precious Birdsong kept the runs going by smacking a single to centerfield that allowed Burgess to give Middle a 3-1 lead.

MT picked up a pitcher to shortstop to first base double play in the third inning before adding seven runs in the bottom half of the frame.

The Blue Raiders scored all the runs in the inning with one out. Lexi Cushing had two singles in the inning, one of which started the rally. Kirstyn Cuccia and McGee picked up a RBI each on singles before Burgess hit her second double of the day to give MT a 8-1 lead. Cushing's second single of the inning sent in two more runs for the Blue Raiders as Burgess and Birdsong came around to score.

Up 10-1, MT allowed no hits and just one walk in the Ram's final two innings of chances to get the win.

Up Next

The Blue Raiders head out to play rival WKU in a three-game conference series this weekend. The games get underway with a doubleheader in Bowling Green on Saturday at 1pm and then concludes with a single game on Sunday at 1pm.
