Lady Raiders capture fifth-straight win
1/17/2019 9:46:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Improve to 5-0 in C-USA
SAN ANTONIO – Winning conference games is never easy and the level of difficulty can be even more problematic on the road, which makes Middle Tennessee's 72-52 win at UTSA even more impressive here Thursday.
The Lady Raiders battled foul trouble and an upset-minded UTSA team before finally pulling away in the second half to win their fifth straight and improve to 14-4 overall, 5-0 in C-USA.
The win was Middle Tennessee's 200th conference win under Head Coach Rick Insell as the Lady Raiders improved to 200-31 in such games under the seven-time Hall of Famer.
"This was a tough game and a good win for us to get on the road, but we did not play smart tonight," Insell said. "That was a little disappointing, but I am pleased with how our young ladies battled and worked hard to get the victory. It's always good to win."
With starters A'Queen Hayes, Taylor Sutton, Anna Jones and Jess Louro battling foul trouble, the Lady Raiders needed unsung heroes to step up.
Jordan Majors and Alexis Whittington obliged.
Majors continued her sensational breakout season with her second double-double and a career-high 14 points to go with 12 rebounds. Of those 12 caroms, a whopping seven came on the offensive end. Those seven offensive boards represented half of the team's 14 offensive rebounds.
Whittington was also solid. The freshman from Murfreesboro scored seven points and tied her career high with 19 minutes played in which she also provided stellar defense.
"The reason it is called a team is because you need all of the players," Insell said. "Different players step up at different times and that was the case here. Jordan Majors had played well all season and she came up big again tonight. She was solid. Alexis Whittington improves each day. We needed her tonight and she came through."
In all, four Lady Raiders tallied double figures, led by Alex Johnson's game-high 17 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal. Sutton continued her stellar freshman campaign with 13 points in 20 minutes. Jones tallied 13 points, pulled four rebounds and collected a pair of steals.
Key in victory was Middle Tennessee's patented team defense. The nation's 18th-ranked team in scoring defense at 55.4 points per game was at it again as it held the Roadrunners to 52 points. It marks the 12th time the Lady Raiders have held an opponent under 60 this season, including all five C-USA foes to date.
Despite the 20-point margin, it was a battle throughout against the hard-playing Roadrunners. The Lady Raiders led 15-11 after one quarter and carried a 34-25 advantage into the half. UTSA pulled to within six in the third quarter, but Middle Tennessee stretched the lead back to nine by the end of the quarter and pulled away with a 20-9 fourth quarter.
The Lady Raiders won the battle of the boards, 40-33, as nine of the 11 players who saw action had at least one carom.
Middle Tennessee will return to action when it plays at UTEP Saturday at 2 PM.
