Savage collects double-double in victory
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee raced out to a 14-0 lead and then made winning plays down the stretch to secure an 82-70 win against TCU to close out the non-conference portion of the schedule Sunday.
The Lady Raiders (8-4) had four players in double figures, led by freshman Aislynn Hayes' 22 points and career-high eight rebounds. Anastasia Hayes and Taylor Sutton each netted 14 points and Charity Savage continued her outstanding breakout season with her fourth double-double featuring 13 points and a career-high 22 rebounds.
Courtney Whitson added nine points and four rebounds while Alexis Whittington came up big with eight points and four caroms.
Many players were clutch down the stretch to hold off TCU (9-2) but none were bigger than Savage, whose 22 rebounds were the fifth-most nationally this season. It is also the fourth most all-time in a single game by a Lady Raider and the most since Jennifer McFall collected 25 against UT-Martin in 1985.
Savage came up huge when it mattered most as she led a 15-4 run to close out the game after the Horned Frogs had closed to within 67-66 with 3:29 remaining. The senior forward scored eight of her 13 points in the final frame and had five of her 22 rebounds in the fourth quarter. Savage calmly sank all six of her free throws in the game's final 32 seconds to seal the victory.
"I'm so proud of this team and the effort and energy they brought to the court to beat a very good TCU team today," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "We had so many players contribute to this one. They were all huge. Charity was big again but she's been doing that all season. She was clutch again today."
TCU had possession of the ball trailing 69-66 when Savage collected her only steal with 2:33 remaining. After a Lady Raider miss, TCU once again had a chance to tie the game but Savage, playing with four fouls, took a charge with 1:37 remaining. She then converted a layup on the other end to push the lead to 71-66 with 1:19 remaining. Savage also collected three defensive rebounds in the final minute when she also converted all of her charity tosses.
The Lady Raiders raced out to a 14-0 lead to start the game and never trailed. They won the battle of the boards with a season-high 52 rebounds while limiting TCU to 38. Middle Tennessee also had its best day at the free-throw line, connecting on 22-of-29 attempts for 76 percent. More importantly, the Lady Raiders were 13-of-16 in the fourth quarter with the game was on the line.
Middle Tennessee connected on eight 3-pointers, led by Aislynn Hayes' five to tie her season high.
The Lady Raiders will turn their attention to Conference USA play which begins with Old Dominion Thursday at Murphy Center. Tipoff is 6:30 p.m.
