Lady Raiders fall in C-USA opener

MT plays host to Charlotte Saturday
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee appeared to be heading toward a conference-opening win Thursday, but a second-half slump doomed the Lady Raiders.
With Old Dominion (11-2, 1-0) visiting the Murphy Center for the fifth time, MT (8-5, 0-1) got off to a hot start but couldn't sustain it, seeing a 36-26 halftime lead turn into a 67-56 defeat.
"You have to take your cap off to [ODU] — they did a good job in the second half, made shots, played good defense and shut our offense down," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "It was one of those nights where we had a young team that was struggling … and they wanted it more than we did."
Offense came easy to the Lady Raiders at times in the first half. They shot a respectable 36.8 percent (14-38) before halftime, including 40.9 percent in the second quarter, to build a double-digit lead heading to the locker room.
ODU's Conference USA-leading defense (51.1 points per game allowed) came to play in the second half, though, smothering MT's first-half momentum.
The Monarchs limited the Lady Raiders to 17.2 percent shooting in the last two quarters, including 16.7 percent from the 3-point line, and forced 10 turnovers.
"We got shots … we just missed some that we usually hit," Insell said. "That's part of it. We just have to come back out tomorrow and be ready to play Charlotte on Saturday."
Despite suffering through a 24-10 ODU run in the third quarter, senior Charity Savage did her best to ignite her team.
She registered six of her 10 points and six of her game-high 15 rebounds in the quarter and hit a 3-pointer and an important put-back layup to halt a 0-for-7 Lady Raider shooting slump. The double-double was her fifth this season, and she may move up the NCAA rebounding list after going into the night sixth with 12.1 per game.
"They really upped their defense and their rebounding in the second half, and we struggled to score," Savage said. "We just have to forget about it and change the attitude heading into the next game."
Middle Tennessee was led in the scoring department by sophomore Anastasia Hayes with 18. Freshman Courtney Whitson narrowly missed her first double-double with nine points and nine rebounds, and sophomore Alexis Whittington added eight points and six rebounds off the bench.
The Lady Raiders will have to wipe the loss and move on immediately with only one day of rest before Charlotte (10-2, 1-0) travels to the Murphy Center Saturday.
"We just need to get in the gym and shoot," Insell said. "We've been shooting the ball pretty good all year; the shots just didn't fall tonight. It's just one of those things … we just have to live with it and go with it."
