Johnson, Sutton combine for 42 points
NORFOLK, Va. – Alex Johnson and Taylor Sutton combined for 42 points but it wasn't enough as Middle Tennessee dropped a tough 70-65 decision against Old Dominion here Saturday.
The Lady Raiders (18-6, 9-2) led 13-12 following a Sutton jumper with 3:06 remaining in the first quarter but it proved to be the last time they would lead in the contest as Old Dominion (17-7, 8-4) seized momentum early in the second quarter.
For the most part, the game was within two possessions for the duration. Middle Tennessee was only down 42-41 after a pair of Sutton free throws with 3:26 remaining in the third quarter, but Old Dominion finished the quarter on a 10-2 run to push the advantage back to nine, 52-43.
The Lady Raiders closed to within four on three different occasions in the fourth quarter, but they could never get over the hump and regain the lead.
"It was one of those games, but I think you have to give a lot of credit to Old Dominion," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "They played hard. They outshot us and they outrebounded us. It was a competitive game between two hard-playing teams but each time we made a run, they had an answer."
Old Dominion won the rebounding battle, 47-23 and its 70 points were the most allowed by the stellar Lady Raider defense in C-USA play. It was the third-highest scoring total against Middle Tennessee this season.
The loss overshadowed a tremendous performance by Johnson, who poured in 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting to go with three steals and two blocked shots. Johnson was a warrior in the paint and she had to be in a physical game inside. Sutton was also strong with 19 points and three steals. They were the only two Lady Raiders in double figures.
A'Queen Hayes tallied six points, seven rebounds and three steals, while Jordan Majors continued to be one of the league's top reserves. She finished with four points, seven rebounds, two blocks, one assit and one steal in a well-rounded game.
Aziah Hudson led Old Dominion with 23 points on the strength of 5-of-6 shooting from 3-point range.
The Lady Raiders will return home to face WKU Thursday. Tipoff is 6:30 p.m.
