But Lady Raiders fall 67-56
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The 64th renewal of one of Conference USA's oldest rivalries lived up to the billing as WKU held off an ardent Middle Tennessee squad to capture a 67-56 win at Diddle Arena Thursday.
It was the regular-season finale for both teams who will now turn their attention to the C-USA Championships in Frisco, Texas next week. Middle Tennessee (21-9, 11-5) will carry the No. 3 seed into the tournament, while WKU (17-13, 11-5) earned the No. 4 seed by virtue of Thursday night's win. Both teams receive a first-round bye into the quarterfinals.
Alex Johnson turned in another stellar performance and led the Lady Raiders with 17 points. Johnson was 3-for-4 from 3-point range, tying a career high for treys in a game. When Johnson wasn't scoring she was impacting the game in other ways. The stat sheet stuffer added three assists, two steals and one blocked shot.
Johnson wasn't the only Lady Raiders to dominate in the paint. Forward Jordan Majors was also solid off of the bench with 10 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Majors was 5-of-7 from the field.
Taylor Sutton tallied nine points, and A'Queen Hayes had another well-rounded game with eight points, five assists, three rebounds and one steal.
The Lady Raiders trailed 37-30 at the half but used a 17-point third quarter to pull to within 51-47 going into the final stanza. The first portion of the final frame was back-and-forth until WKU used a run that enabled it to stretch the lead to double figures with under six minutes remaining.
