Senior captures medalist honors at Old Waverly
WEST POINT, Miss. – Marcus Byrd captured his second individual championship of the spring with a record-tying performance at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship here Tuesday.
Byrd's strong play, coupled with that of junior Tanner Owens (3-under, T13), enabled the Blue Raiders to turn in a team-total 9-under 855 to finish sixth overall, behind Louisiana-Monroe (18-under), Ole Miss (17-under), No. 4 Vanderbilt (15-under), Little Rock (14-under) and Mississippi State (13-under).
Not only did Byrd's 13-under 203 enable him to win medalist honors, but it also tied for the best three-round total in school history. It marked the second time the stellar golf player had turned in a 203.
Byrd was sensational during the three-round event with rounds of 70, 66 and 67 to win the medalist honors by three strokes against Jackson Suber of Ole Miss. Byrd followed his sensational second round of 6-under Monday, which was good for the eighth best round in program history, with a third round 5-under to stay ahead of the pack Tuesday.
It was a solid front nine for Byrd, where he posted four birdies and set his strong third round in motion. He added two more on the back.
Owens was also impressive as he turned in a 3-over to notch his fourth Top 15 finish of the spring. Owens' solid tournament also included a 6-under 66 in the first round to get Middle Tennessee off to a strong start and tie for the eighth-best round in school history.
Byrd aided his cause with a tournament best 11-under on par-5 scoring, while Owens tied for sixth on Par-4 scoring at 2-under to bolster his attack.
Sophomore Cooper Sears finished at 3-over for Middle Tennessee. Freshman Palmer Sadlowski finished at 9-over, followed by senior James Beckner at 13-over.
The Old Waverly Collegiate was the final tune-up for Middle Tennessee prior to next week's action at the C-USA Championship.
