Raiders seeking second consecutive league title
TEXARKANA, Ark. – With a trip to the NCAA Regionals on the line at Texarkana Country Club, Middle Tennessee men's golf tees off Monday in the Conference USA Championship.
The Blue Raiders are riding plenty of momentum heading into the postseason after strong finishes at Vanderbilt and Mississippi State, the latter of which saw senior Marcus Byrd continue his blistering play as he collected his second individual title and third C-USA Golfer of the Week honor of the spring semester.
"Since the first day of classes this fall we have been working towards this tournament," head coach Mark McEntire said. "We know that we would have to win to make postseason and we have been working on that all year. I really like the way this team has played this semester and feel that we are playing our best coming into the tournament!"
Byrd, boasting a spectacular 71.4 stroke average on the season, will lead the Blue Raider lineup in his final Conference USA Championship appearance.
The Atlanta native has improved every season at Texarkana Country Club, finishing sixth a season ago to lead his team to the Conference USA Championship.
Also in the lineup is senior James Beckner, making his third appearance in the C-USA Championship where he has twice finished in the Top 25.
Junior Tanner Owens, sophomore Cooper Sears and freshman Palmer Sadlowski join the senior duo in Texarkana with each making their first championship appearance for the Blue Raiders.
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are scheduled to feature 18 holes of stroke play each. The top four teams will then move on to match play semi-finals on Wednesday afternoon and match play finals on Thursday.
"I would like to send Marcus and James out on top," McEntire added. "The golf course is really good and the team that makes the most pars will be happy with the finish. The goal is to get to match play and see what happens."
Middle Tennessee will tee off on the first hole on Monday with Sears leading off at 9:20 a.m. He will be followed by Beckner, Owens, Sadlowski and Byrd in 10-minute intervals.
With inclement weather in the forecast for the week, tee times are subject to change Monday morning with the possibility of playing 36 holes on the tournament's first day.
