FORT MYERS, Fla. – Middle Tennessee showed exactly what its capable of on the final day of the Conference USA Championship with a spectacular round of even par 288, but it was too little too late as head coach Chris Adams and her squad were only able to move up to fifth place on Wednesday.
The Blue Raiders posted the second best round of the day, behind only a scorching hot UTSA team that upset No. 40 Old Dominion to claim the team title, and finished the tournament at 17-over par (301-292-288=881) with solid improvements each day at Verandah Club.
"I'm very proud of the way our girls fought back today," Adams said. "We made a strong move and had a lot of birdies, but this golf course is just one that can get you and we gave four shots back there on the final hole.
"Still to finish with the second best round on the course was a testament to the talent and fight of our team. We wanted to make a strong statement today and I think we did that."
Middle Tennessee had three golfers post rounds under par to close out the week, with seniors Jenna Burris and Hanley Long each closing out their final Conference USA Championship with strong rounds while freshman Catherine Caudill pitched in with her second consecutive under par round.
Long and Burris each turned in scorecards of 1-under par 71 in the final round, dropping in three birdies apiece to help them climb the individual leaderboard on day three.
The veteran duo turning in matching rounds under par was all too fitting for what is likely their last collegiate round together, as the pair of seniors will go down as two of the best in the program's 18-year history.
"Hanley and Jenna have contributed so much to this program during their careers and set such a strong standard for us moving forward," Adams stated. "Those two along with Kailey (Collier) have been such a great senior class for me and our team."
The younger Caudill's 1-under par round was her second consecutive 70 and made her 3-over par (78-70-71=219) on the week to tie for 13th place in the field of 60 golfers. Long finished just behind her in a tie for 15th at 4-over par (74-75-71=220) while Burris finished 6-over par (78-73-71=222) on the week.
Sophomore Sophie Burks carded a 3-over par 75 on Wednesday while classmate Caroline Caudill battled through the final round to close out the scoring for the Raiders with a 7-over par 79.
"I'm proud of the way Catherine played here as a freshman and I look forward to great things from her and our two sophomores, Sophie and Caroline, and the potential our program will continue to have with them leading the way next season," Adams added.
The Blue Raiders are likely on the outside looking in when NCAA Regional selections roll around, but are hopeful that Long will be picked for an at-large spot to compete in the field as an individual at one of four regional locations.
