Sears leads MT with even par 72
Round 1 Results
MURRELLS INLET, S.C. – After a solid start to the day had Middle Tennessee men's golf 6-over par through nine holes and in the middle of the pack, the Blue Raiders dropped off after the turn and finished the opening round of the NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional at 17-over par.
Head coach Mark McEntire's bunch has a hole to climb out of with rounds of golf still to go, currently tied for 13th alongside Robert Morris after 18 holes of golf.
"Obviously we're disappointed with our round today," McEntire said. "We got a good round out of Cooper, but for the most part I think our guys just put too much pressure on themselves today.
"The goal was for everyone to shoot par and had we done that we would be right where we want to be, but we were just a little too timid, a little too tight, and trying to force some things out there."
Sophomore Cooper Sears had the round of the day for Middle Tennessee, carding an even par 72 to finish round one tied for 20th and only two strokes out of a Top 10 spot.
The highlight of the day for Sears and the Blue Raiders came on the Par 5 14th hole where the Mount Juliet, Tenn., native dropped in a 15-foot eagle putt that had him 2-under and tied for ninth early in the day.
Junior Tanner Owens played a solid round of golf much of the day for McEntire, but a few minor mishaps coupled with a few missed birdie opportunities put the lefty at 4-over par through 18 holes.
Senior James Beckner turned in a 5-over par 77 on the day, but failed to card a birdie after the turn after collecting a pair of them in his first nine holes.
Freshmen Palmer Sadlowski and Jake Marvelli each turned in scorecards of 8-over par 80 in their opening rounds, but each showed promising signs. Marvelli was 1-under through six holes and carded a team-high four birdies while Sadlowski was 1-over with a pair of birdies after the turn.
Middle Tennessee will move to the front nine to begin its round on Tuesday with Sadlowski leading things off at 9:20 a.m. ET. He will be followed by Marvelli, Beckner, Owens and Sears in 11-minute intervals.
