MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Two Middle Tennessee programs received top team academic honors in Conference USA, as the league announced Tuesday that Blue Raider men's tennis and volleyball both earned Sport Academic Awards.
MT's men's tennis team continues to reel in the awards after a banner season, which was capped off with the program's first ever C-USA title. While successful on the court, the Blue Raiders were even more impressive off the court, claiming many scholar accolades for their hard work in the classroom.
The Raiders were named an ITA All-Academic Team, which is awarded to tennis programs that have a cumulative team GPA of 3.20 or above, and 10 Blue Raiders were named Scholar-Athletes.
As for more C-USA accolades, Tom Moonen and Max Rauch were named to the C-USA All-Academic Team. Moonen has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA in accounting and business administration and Rauch, an aerospace, mathematics and engineering technology major, posted a 3.90 GPA.
"We take great pride in what our student athletes accomplish in the classroom," men's tennis Head Coach Jimmy Borendame said. "It's a cornerstone of our culture, and this award is something we are really proud of."
A month after being named an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award recipient for the second consecutive season — and second time in program history — MT volleyball earned Tuesday's C-USA honor.
The Blue Raiders posted a combined GPA of 3.55 in the 2018-19 school year, including a 3.76 GPA in the spring 2019 semester. Four Blue Raiders earned a 4.0 in the spring, and four other members of the team completed the spring with a GPA of 3.5-3.9.
Bri Tankesley, Dora Peonia and Taylor Hammill were all inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma National Student Athlete Honor Society in the spring. Additionally, Tankesley was listed as a member of the C-USA All-Academic Team at the conclusion of the 2018 volleyball season.
"Every member of our team did a fantastic job of working hard in the classroom last year. They deserve all of these team awards, and we've set goals to be great in the classroom again this year," volleyball Head Coach Chuck Crawford said.
MT volleyball kicks off the 2019 season on Aug. 30 with a tournament in St. Louis, while men's tennis begins its fall action on Sept. 27 with the Dale Short Shootout at the Adams Tennis Complex.
