Two unanswered goals in the second secured the Skyhawk win
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Blue Raiders (3-3-0) suffered another crushing defeat on Sunday, this one coming from in-state foe UT Martin (2-2-2). Sophomore midfielder Miya Lennon netted her first goal of the season, which brings her total to two for her career.
"It was certainly a tough game," said head coach Aston Rhoden. "As you can see the shots on goals were fairly even and the game went back and forth. I think the difference is they took advantage of the chance they had and we didn't."
The first half was tightly contested by both teams, while there wasn't much offense to be played both teams stood strong in their defensive thirds especially Middle Tennessee who did not allow a single shot on goal.
Junior Carolin Engelhard nearly had the goal of the match midway through the first half, after blasting a set piece from 30 yards out that slammed against the crossbar.
Middle Tennessee struck first in the second half with Lennon's goal but was unable to capitalize on any other opportunities. The Skyhawks would go on to score two unanswered goals in the second half, with the last coming just seven minutes before the end of regulation.
Not only was the game heated because of the scorching temperature, but it also saw its fair share of heated moments during the match. In total there was 26 fouls committed by both teams.
"The fan support so far has been unbelievable," said Rhoden. "I wish we can give them the outcome we want, but it certainly helps the team, the environment and the sport. For a Sunday at 2pm match, the crowd was awesome and I hope they continue to come back".
RECORD WATCH
Junior forward Peyton DePriest is now tied for 5th all-time in program history with 29 career goals scored. She is just ten goals shy of breaking the all-time record which is currently held by Holly Grogan with 38 goals scored. Be sure to continue watching as DePriest tries to make some history.
