Loss ends four-game win streak
HOUSTON – One of the nation's longest conference winning streaks is still alive.
Middle Tennessee put up a strong second-half effort but it wasn't enough as Rice as pulled away in the final quarter and secured a 77-60 win at Tudor Fieldhouse Saturday.
It was the 30th consecutive Conference USA win for Rice, which is the fourth-longest active conference win streak in the country dating back to 2018.
The Lady Raiders (16-8, 8-4) trailed by as many as 16 with 8:16 remaining in the third quarter but cut the lead to seven twice and had a chance to slice the deficit to four when Rellah Boothe's 3-pointer from the corner rimmed out with under three minutes remaining in the stanza.
Rice (16-6, 11-0) finished the frame on a strong run to push the lead back to 15, 59-44, entering the final quarter.
"Rice is a very good team all-around and they are particularly good on the defensive end," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "Playing from behind is not a good option against them from that standpoint, although I was proud of the way our young ladies battled in the second half, especially in the third quarter."
Making her second appearance as a Lady Raider, Boothe saw her most extensive playing time and responded with 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting to go with six rebounds.
Anastasia Hayes had another stat-sheet stuffing performance. The sophomore guard led the Lady Raiders with 16 points, six assists and added four rebounds and two steals.
Taylor Suton and Aislynn Hayes each scored 10 points for Middle Tennessee. Charity Savage finished with seven points, six rebounds and three steals.
Rice came into the game allowing just 55.6 points per game – second in the league in regard to scoring defense and the Owls demonstrated their stinginess as they held the Lady Raiders to nine points below their season average of 69 points per game.
Middle Tennessee had a difficult time getting in sync offensively in the first half and found itself facing a 12-point deficit, 38-26, at intermission.
The Lady Raiders shot just 28 percent (9-of-32) in the first half, including 3-of-12 from 3-point range. Rice, on the other hand, blistered the nets to the tune of 50 percent (15-of-30) in the opening half on its way to building the double-digit advantage.
Preseason Player of the Year Erica Ogwumike had a double-double by halftime with 13 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Owls. She finished with 25 points and 17 rebounds. Teammate Nancy Mulkey added 20 points, six rebounds and four steals.
