Junior shot 63 percent in two Lady Raider road wins
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee standout Anastasia Hayes has been named the Conference USA Player of the Week for the fourth time this season after putting together two outstanding games at WKU.
Hayes had her best shooting games of the season to lead Middle Tennessee to the weekend road sweep, becoming the first C-USA team to sweep a season-series from WKU and the first team to win two games inside Diddle Arena in the same season.
"I'm really proud of our team," Hayes said. "We had so many different players step up and contribute. It was a great road trip for us and to get two wins there was special. It is never easy winning on the road, especially at WKU."
Hayes averaged 22.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals in the two wins and is the only player in the nation to score 20-plus points in 13 games this season. She has scored 20-plus in 17 straight dating back to last season and has reached double figures in 42 of 43 games as Lady Raider.
The junior guard shot 63 percent (20-of-32), going 10-of-16 from the field in both games. Hayes tallied 25 points and dished out eight assists in Friday's win, then netted 20 points to go with four rebounds, three assists and one steal Saturday.
Hayes was instrumental in both wins, but her heroics at the end of the third quarter sparked Friday's win as MT ended a six-game losing streak at Diddle Arena, winning there for the first time since 2013.
WKU had closed to within 48-44 late in the third but Hayes scored seven straight points with two free throws, a three-point play and then a steal and running 7-footer to push the lead back to double figures.
The Lady Raiders return to action when they play at UAB Thursday at 6 p.m.
