Loss snaps nine-game road conference win streak
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Middle Tennessee saw its five-game win streak snapped in an 82-72 road loss against Charlotte here Saturday afternoon. The loss also snapped a nine-game conference road win streak for Lady Raiders (12-5, 10-2).
The Lady Raiders had three players score 20-plus points but it wasn't enough to offset Charlotte (6-7, 5-3), which had five players in double figures.
Courtney Whitson scored a career-best 22 points on 6-of-9 shooting from 3-point range. The six treys equaled a career high. Anastasia Hayes also netted 22 points, marking her 20th consecutive game with 20-plus points to extend the nation's longest active streak. Hayes also had nine assists and tied her career high with six steals. Deja Cage added 21 points on the strength of four 3-pointers.
Charlotte won the rebounding battle 48-31 and another key aspect was the 49ers shooting 81 percent from the free-throw line, where they were 25-of-31. Middle Tennessee, on the other hand, was 5-of-13 from the charity stripe.
"We didn't deserve to win this game today," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "Charlotte played with more energy and did a good job all around. To win on the road you must do the little things, hit free throws, battle on the boards, knock down open shots. We usually do those things, but we didn't today. We didn't do the things necessary to win the game."
Middle Tennessee had 23 more field goal attempts than Charlotte and connected on three more field goals than the 49ers but the difference was at the free-throw line. The 49ers, who led 44-37 at the half, connected on just eight second-half field goals; however, they were 21-of-26 at the free-throw line in the final two quarters.
The Lady Raiders return to action when they play host to Marshall Friday. Tipoff is 6 p.m.
