BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Middle Tennessee baseball team split their doubleheader against UAB to begin Conference USA play Friday afternoon in Birmingham, Ala. The Blue Raiders (12-9, C-USA 1-1) were shutout, 8-0, to start the day against the Blazers (8-12, C-USA 1-1), but bounced back in the second game with a strong 11-9 victory.
GAME 2: MT 11, UAB 9
After only managing two hits in the first game, the Blue Raiders bats woke up and MT collected all 11 of their runs on 10 hits in the first three innings.
MT grabbed a pair of runs in the top of the first on a bases loaded walk to DJ Wright and a RBI single from Brett Coker that plated Cole Escher from third base.
In the top of the second inning the Blue Raiders led off the inning with three consecutive singles from Mason Speirs, Fausto Lopez, and Hunter Sullivan. All three runners were later walked in or score on a hit-by-pitch. MT racked up six runs on three hits, two walks, and one Blazer miscue to give the Blue Raiders and early, 8-0, lead.
UAB got a pair back in the bottom of the second to cut the Raiders lead, 8-2.
Nathan Sanders added on to the MT total with a two-run home run over the left field wall following a Cole Escher RBI single.
Sander's longball was his first of the season and the junior finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs and three RBI.
The Blazers began to claw back by scoring seven unanswered runs, cutting the MT lead, 11-9, heading into the sixth.
Senior David Zoz came on in relief for Austin Cheeley and pitched the last 2.2 innings and striking out a pair to earn his third save of the season and seal the win for the Blue Raiders.
GAME 1: UAB 8, MT 0
In the first game of the doubleheader the Blue Raiders could only manage two hits off Blazer starting pitcher Riley Davis. The junior pitched all seven innings, didn't allow a walk and struck out five Raiders on his way to his second win of the season.
Blue Raider starting pitcher Aaron Brown did not have an outing like we've seen from him to start the season. The Mt. Juliet native gave up eight runs, all earned, walked three and struck out a season low two batters in 3.1 innings pitched.
Brown turned over pitching duties to Josh Young with one out in the third inning. Young didn't allow a run, gave up just one hit and struck out two in 2.2 innings pitched.
The Blue Raiders and Blazers will be back at it again tomorrow at 1 PM from Young Memorial Field before closing out the series on Sunday at Regions Park.
