CHARLOTTE, N.C. – One minute, the Middle Tennessee men's tennis team was up just 1-0 thanks to the doubles point. About five minutes later, the Blue Raiders clinched a spot in the Conference USA Championship match.
One right after the other, Chris Edge, Max Rauch, and Stijn Slump closed out their respective matches in straight sets as the Raiders are now one step closer toward back-to-back championships.
After cruising to a 6-2 first-set victory, Edge battled in the second set before earning a break at 4-4 and holding serve for the win.
Rauch fell down a break in his second set, but won the final four games for a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
A couple minutes later, Slump closed out the match, holding serve in the final game to also win, 6-3, 6-4.
Earlier in doubles, Francisco Rocha and Rauch dropped the first two games, but came back to win 6-3. Tom Moonen and Edge remained on serve until 4-4 when they earned a break before closing it out on their serve.
In the unfinished singles matches, Rocha won his first set before the match was called in the second set. Moonen and Pavl Motl each dropped their first sets, but both responded with convincing second-set victories.
Up next for the Blue Raiders is the Conference USA Championship match, tomorrow at 12 p.m., against the winner of Old Dominion and Florida Atlantic.
