MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – No. 23 Middle Tennessee men's tennis (16-3, 1-0) returns to the 'Boro after being away for more than two weeks to play host to regional foes Tennessee Tech and Bellarmine on Sunday, March 13 at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. CT inside the Adams Tennis Complex.
The Blue Raiders are winners of their last 10 matches and are newly ranked inside the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and Tennis Channel/USTA National Top 25. Sunday's double-header will be MT's first appearance back at the Adams Tennis Complex since winning the 74th Annual Blue Gray Tennis Classic. In that span the Raiders have defeated four ranked opponents and three power 5 schools.
Middle Tennessee comes into the matches with four student-athletes ranked in either singles or doubles competition. No. 69 Francisco Rocha is the highest-ranked singles player and was recently promoted to the Blue Raider top court. Rocha is 12-1 on the season on court Nos. 1 and 2, the Porto, Portugal product has won nine-straight singles matches.
Graduate Student Chris Edge is the newest Raider to make a ranked appearance, coming at No. 101 in the ITA singles rankings. Edge is 15-2 on court three this season and has picked up his first two official ranked wins of his career in the Raider win streak.
No. 115 Stijn Slump remains in the ITA rankings, he is the only Blue Raider to retain his rank for the duration of the season. Slump has won four of his last five matches, two of those were against other ranked adversaries and he split results. All four of those victories have come in straight sets.
Freshman Oskar Brostrom Poulsen and Rocha remain in the ITA doubles rankings, coming in this week as the No. 45 doubles duo in the country. The pair is looking to bounce back on Sunday after dropping two of their last three matches.
Upperclassmen Stepan Holis and Pavel Motl have returned to winning form over the past few weeks, Holis had an outstanding performance at the Blue Gray Classic and is on a six-match singles winning streak. Motl has won four-straight and clinched the win for MT over No. 65 USF.
Tennessee Tech comes to the ATC with a 1-7 record, but has played a very tough schedule with road trips to Wake Forest and Mississippi State. The Golden Eagles have also been struck by the injury bug this season, Tech will bring seven players to the match. Adding some Sunday funday, fans might notice similarity in names between the two programs, Evzen Holis for TTU is a cousin to Blue Raider Stepan Holis, Evzen primarily plays on court No. 3, Stepan plays on court No. 4 for MT, we will see if coaches elect to place the cousins across the net from eachother tomorrow. Sunday's match will be the 40th all-time meeting between MT and TTU dating back to 1969, the Raiders have a 33-6 record in those meetings.
Bellarmine sits at 4-6 on the season and has lost three of their last four matches, including a 0-7 sweep by Belmont. Out of the four wins, three of those wins have come to non-Division I opponents. The Knights only DI was against Tennessee State, who the Blue Raiders have handedly beat twice this season by a combined score of 13-1. Bellarmine is led by Senior Cole Groetsh, the Chalfont, Pa. native is 4-5 on court No. 1 this season and 5-2 in doubles competition. Sunday's match will be the first-ever meeting between MT and Bellarmine, the Knights recently made the jump from NCAA DII to DI and they compete in the ASUN conference.
