Late Rally Lifts Blue Raiders Past Catamounts
3/2/2022 9:22:00 PM | Baseball
Winners of three of their past four, the Blue Raiders (4-6) scored five runs in the top of the ninth, part of a span of seven unanswered runs in the final two innings to take down WCU (4-5).
Leading another offensive surge for MT was Nathan Sanders, who tied a career high in hits with four in five trips to the plate. Sanders drove in and scored two runs.
Brett Coker hit two go-ahead RBI singles, one in the fifth to give the Blue Raiders a 3-2 lead, and another in the ninth to put the Blue Raiders up 6-5.
With MT down 0-2, Wyatt Morgan opened the Blue Raider scoring in the top of the fifth with a bases-loaded walk. Coker followed with his first of two clutch hits to make it 3-2.
WCU responded with three runs in the bottom-half of the fifth. Two doubles and a single in the eighth inning tied the game at five started MT's late rally.
As Peyton Wigginton held the Catamounts scoreless in the final two innings, the Blue Raiders added five more runs on five hits and one error in the ninth.
Just days off of his last start, Wigginton earned the win in his first relief outing since 2018. Wigginton, James Sells and Avery Gunn pitched the final 4 1/3 innings, did not allow a run, combined for six strikeouts and allowed one hit.
MT and WCU used seven pitchers apiece.
Tatsunori Negishi finished with three hits, an RBI and two runs while Fausto Lopez and Jared Vetetoe each added two hits.
