Lady Raiders Welcome In-State Rival Vanderbilt for Round 3 of WNIT
3/23/2022 5:00:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Lady Raiders are advancing to the Women's NIT Round of 16 and will be taking on the Commodores of Vanderbilt tomorrow, Thursday, March 24 at 6:30 p.m. CT.
Middle Tennessee women's basketball (25-7, 14-4) has made its way to the third round of the WNIT for the third time in program history after defeating Wake Forest 67-55 in the second round of the 2022 WNIT. Now, the Lady Raiders are tasked with a 16-18 SEC opponent in Vanderbilt.
The Commodores are highlighted by their ability to force turnovers, leading the SEC in steals and being ranked seventh overall in the nation for steals. Leading the way is the nation's leader in steals, Jordyn Cambridge. Cambridge set the program record for steals in a season last time out in their win against Liberty with 124 steals and counting and currently averages 3.91 steals per game this season.
Middle Tennessee currently leads the all-time series with a 13-8 record head-to-head, one of those wins coming from earlier this season after the Lady Raiders dropped the Commodores 55-46 on November 15, 2021.
Last Time Out – March 21 vs. Wake Forest – (W, 67-55) RECAP
The Lady Raiders dominated the first three quarters of the contest, playing great defense, holding the Demon Deacons to just 30.6 percent from the field throughout the game and turning the Deacs over 17 times. Wake Forest made a late run in the fourth quarter, but the 23-point lead at the end of the third quarter was too much to overcome.
Middle Tennessee got whatever they wanted in the paint, allowing Anastasiia Boldreva and Kseniya Malashka to cook against the Demon Deacons' forwards. Malashka led MT with 18 points, while Boldyreva scored 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting, leading the team in rebounds with six and blocks with four.
Joining Malashka off the bench was Courtney Blakely, who scored 12 points and hauled in four rebounds while blitzing past Wake Forest defenders, often forcing them to back pedal to attempt to keep up with speed on the court. She finished 4-for-7 from the field. Combined, Malashka and Blakely scored 30 points off the bench, well out pacing the Deacs' 12 points from their reserves.
