Blue Raiders Historic Season Ends in Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. – No. 19 Middle Tennessee men's tennis (28-5) ended the best season in program history falling to No. 20 North Carolina State in the NCAA Tournament Second Round by a score of 4-3 inside the Andy Andrews Indoor Tennis Stadium on Saturday night.
The Blue Raiders end the season with the most wins and the best overall record in program history. MT advanced to the Second Round of NCAA Tournament for the third time, still yet to advance to the Sweet 16.
Graduate Student Chris Edge departs Middle Tennessee after five seasons with the program. After picking up an individual singles win in tonight's loss to NC State, the Carlisle, Great Britain native caps one of the greatest careers in MT men's tennis history. Totaling a 108-44 record in both doubles and singles play, combining for 216 career wins.
This weekend, Edge solidified himself in the Blue Raider record book, ending his career with the following records:
- Combined Wins: 216 (Tied-second with Andreas Siljestrom)
- Singles Wins: 108 (Third in Blue Raider history)
- Doubles Wins: 108 (Third in Blue Raider history)
- Singles Winning Percentage: (.710) 108-44 (Sixth in Blue Raider history)
- Doubles Winning Percentage: (.710) 108-44 (Seventh in Blue Raider history)
Graduate Student Stepan Holis finishes a tremendous collegiate career and his only season with Middle Tennessee with a singles record of 26-15 and a doubles record of 29-10. In his previous four years with New Mexico, Holis earned 81 wins. In one season with MT, Stepan totaled 55 wins, earning 40 percent of his career wins as a Blue Raider.
With the doubles win over UNCW on Friday, Holis ties Julius Robberts, Marco Born, and Andreas Siljestrom for ninth in MT history with 29 doubles wins in a single season.
The two graduate students solidified themselves as one of the greatest doubles pairs in program history, finishing the 2021-22 season with a record of 22-5 (.814) and leaving a lasting legacy on the program.
Head Coach Jimmy Borendame places his bookmark in the 2022 season earning over 200 collegiate wins in his career and as the leader of MT. He led the Blue Raiders to the highest team ranking of his career (No. 15 ITA) and the highest individual player ranking of his career (No. 30 Stijn Slump). Borendame also led all six of his starters to earn Conference USA Athlete of the Week, earned a three-peat in the C-USA Championship, eight wins over power-5 schools, and 10 ITA ranked victories. On May 10, the conference will announce yearly awards for men's tennis, Borendame is looking to add more accolades for his players in the coming days.
North Carolina State picked up the doubles point shifting momentum in the Wolfpacks' favor. Blue Raiders Edge, Francisco Rocha, and Oskar Brostrom Poulsen grinded out victories to keep the MT in the match.
Rocha defeated Robin Catry in a straight-set finisher at 6-2, 7-6 for the second Middle Tennessee point.
Brostrom Poulsen went three rounds with Damien Salvestre, his point equalized the match at three before the Raiders fell on court No. 6 to give the win to the 'Pack.
Middle Tennessee will send three Blue Raiders to the NCAA Individual Championship in Champaign, Ill. later this month. No. 70 Rocha and Brostrom Poulsen earned the C-USA automatic bid for the doubles championship. Slump will travel with the squad as an alternate for the singles championship, as of May 8, Stijn is less than three spots away from earning a placement in the field.
