MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee track and field team is at it's final destination of the season for the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The four-day meet in Eugene, Oregon will see the Blue Raiders send five student-athletes across seven events, the most in Conference USA.
Junior Alaba Akintola is primed to become the first Blue Raider to run a sub-10 100 meter after weeks of resetting his program record. Akintola will start with the 100-meter preliminaries on Wednesday at 7:46 p.m, which will future fellow Nigerian, Favour Ashe of UT-Knoxville, in the same heat. The much-anticipated matchup has seen Akintola take gold over Ashe in Knoxville earlier this season. Akintola's best of 10.04 seconds is currently the third-fastest wind-legal time in the nation. Later in the night the Blue Raider will be running in the 200-meter preliminaries at 8:44 p.m. The Nigerian native currently holds the 22nd best time in the nation at 20.34 seconds, which is also another program record.
Graduate student Eusila Chepkemei has had one of the best seasons ever for a Blue Raider and is looking to close it out with another trophy or two this week. Eusila will start the week off on Thursday with the 1500-meter preliminaries at 7:46 p.m. Currently, her program-record time of 4:13.16 sits at 12th in the nation. On Saturday Chepkemei will be running in the women's 5000-meter championship. She currently ranks 43rd in the nation with a program-record time of 15:57.61.
Sophomore Omamuyovwi Erhire is currently tied for 16th in the nation with a season-best jump of 2.18 meters in the men's high jump. At the preliminaries in Bloomington two weeks ago Erhire found himself in a two-way tie for first place after tying his season best mark. The Nigerian native is scheduled to compete at 7:30 p.m. in the championship round on Friday.
Graduate student Abigail Kwarteng has fully taken advantage of all her opportunities in her one outdoor season with the Blue Raiders. Kwarteng is third in the nation with a height of 1.92 meters, good enough for the program record and Ghana's national record. At the NCAA East Preliminaries, she tied for first with a mark of 1.84 meters and showed that she had plenty of more room to go. The women's high jump will kick off the field events on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
Graduate student Esther Isa will be competing at 4:50 p.m. on Saturday in the championship round of the women's triple jump. Isa is currently 17th in the nation with a season-best mark of 13.37 meters. The C-USA triple jump champion took 7th place during the NCAA East Preliminaries.
