Middle Tennessee Rallies to Open Fall Season-Opener

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders had a three-run ninth inning to open its 2022-23 fall season against the Volunteer State Community College Pioneers to take a 6-5 lead on Wednesday evening. Pitcher Gretchen Mead then closed the game on the mound, and MTSU held on in the final inning of the 10-inning contest to win at the Blue Raider Softball Field.
Kamryn Carcich roped a line drive to shallow right field in the bottom of the ninth to bring the Raiders within a run, before Abby Shoulders sent another liner to right to drive the go-ahead runs home.
Breeden's Briefing
"I thought we competed well," said head coach Jeff Breeden. "From a negative standpoint, we left too many base runners on. But I thought our fast kids that bunted for singles were good. I was really pleased with them. I thought Gretchen Mead pitched really well and I thought Keri Munn pitched well tonight. We're going to get there. The bottom line is that we left too many baserunners. We played good defense, so we just have to keep getting better every game."

Middle Tennessee would add a run in the home half of the inning via a two-out E1 off the bat of Claire Czajkowski. Kamryn Carcich made another dent into the deficit with an E5 in the seventh to make it 5-3 in favor of the visitors, setting the Blue Raiders up to take the lead two innings later.
Munn had a shutout performance from the circle, holding Vol State scoreless in the third and fourth innings. In addition to being in the lineup, Carcich also entered the game as pitcher in the sixth, and held the Pioneers without a run in the seventh and eighth.
