MTSU Softball off to best start in program history through 14 games
STATESBORO, Ga. – Middle Tennessee softball (11-3) is off to its best start through 14 games in program history after a 4-0 weekend at the Georgia Southern Tournament. It's the fourth time in program history MTSU was undefeated in a regular season tournament with at least four wins.
Game 1 – MTSU 14, North Carolina A&T 0
The Blue Raiders jumped out to a commanding lead with 10 runs in the first inning of the day. Claire Czajkowski walked with the bases loaded to drive in the first run, then MTSU scored the next nine runs with two outs.
Ansley Blevins and Ashlee Jacoway both walked with the bases loaded, followed by an Amaya Harris hit by pitch and a Shelby Echols walk. Laura Mealer then doubled to score two, and Savannah Behabetz and Anyce Harvey joined the run-scoring parade with a pair of singles. Czajkowski singled for her second RBI of the inning to make it 10-0 after one frame.
Jacoway's second career homer was a two-run shot over the left field wall, pushing her team's lead to 12-0 in the second. Echols' first triple as a Blue Raider gave MTSU another run in the fourth, and Harris finished off the scoring with an RBI single in the fifth.
Paige Connors improved to 4-1 in the circle thanks to three hitless innings against the Aggies, and Claire Woods finished off the game with three strikeouts in two innings.
Game 2 – MTSU 5, Georgia Southern 0
The Blue Raiders started off game two with another first inning run, that time against the host Georgia Southern Eagles. Mealer walked and later stole second base before being brought around to score by Harvey, who laced a single to center for the game's first run.
In the fourth inning, Keri Munn and the Blue Raiders found themselves in a bases loaded jam with one out. Echols made a great double play at second base to send MTSU back to the plate. The Blue Raiders took advantage of that great defensive play by following up with three runs in the top of the fifth.
Harris was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, then Echols singled in the infield, and Mealer brought them both around to score with a triple to left center. Harvey's sacrifice fly a couple of batters later made it a 4-0 score. MTSU then added another insurance run in the seventh inning with a Behabetz single that scored Echols.
Munn earned the win with four scoreless innings pitched, including one hit allowed. Kamryn Carcich entered in relief and tossed three innings in the circle to earn the save. Carcich struck out three with no walks allowed to help the Blue Raiders wrap up a perfect weekend at Georgia Southern.
