Blue Raiders sweep doubleheader at FIU led by Blevins’ six hits

Miami, Fla. – Middle Tennessee softball (30-14, 9-7) swept FIU (19-24, 5-12) in a doubleheader on Saturday led by freshman Ansley Blevins with six hits.
Game 1 – MTSU 7 – FIU 5
The Blue Raiders got ahead early after back-to-back walks for Shelby Echols and Laura Mealer. Ava Tepe laid down the sacrifice bunt to advance both runners into scoring position to allow for a two-run single for Riley Gilmore. The Panthers responded quickly with back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead 3-2.
Mealer led off the top of the third with a base-hit followed by a walk from Tepe. The Blue Raiders came up empty again leaving both runners on-base. FIU scored a run of their own in the bottom of the third to stretch their lead and force MTSU to make a pitching change.
The Blue Raiders started off the top of the fourth with back-to-back base hits from Blevins and Savannah Behabetz. Echols got the RBI on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead down to two runs.
MTSU started off the seventh inning with a pair of singles from Echols and Mealer who both came around to score on a RBI single by Julia Garcia to tie the game. Then Blevins hits a two-run double to give the Blue Raiders the lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Kamryn Carcich took over and completed the save giving MTSU the comeback win.
Game 2 – MTSU 4 – FIU 1
The Panthers scored their first and only run of the game with an RBI single in the first inning. Carcich started game two giving up just three hits and one run with six strikeouts. Garcia tied the game in the second inning on a solo home run for her second of the season.
Garcia continued her productive day in the top of the fourth inning with a leadoff double then came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Shelby Sargent. Blevins then hit another double for the Blue Raiders and Amaya Harris drove her in to increase the lead to 3-1.
In the top of the sixth Blevins got another hit and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Behabetz. Echols then delivered the RBI triple to increase the lead to 4-1. Echols got her third triple of the season.
Carcich held the Panthers scoreless for six straight innings to get the 4-1 victory and finish off the doubleheader sweep. Garcia led the way offensively with four hits.
