Blue Raiders Set Season-Highs in Hits and Strikeouts in Win over LA Tech
4/29/2023 7:14:00 PM | Baseball
The Blue Raiders move to 21-19 and 11-9 in C-USA with the victory.
The first four batters of the game all reached base for the Blue Raiders, as they set the tone with a five-run first. Jeremiah Boyd and DJ Wright singled to drive in runs, Jackson Galloway had a sacrifice fly, Gabe Jennings walked with the bases loaded and Luke Vinson had an RBI groundout as MTSU batted around and forced the Bulldogs to go to the bullpen early.
Subsequently, two-run doubles from Briggs Rutter and Wright in the second would make it 9-0 after two innings. Mabry and Boyd would then add RBI doubles of their own in the third as the Raiders made it 11-0.
Blue Raider pitching would also spotlight in Saturday's win. RHP Jaden Hamm earned his fifth win of the season, striking out nine in five innings, before RHP Eriq Swan came out of the bullpen and tossed 3.2 frames. Swan allowed just one baserunner in his first three innings, and had six strikeouts. RHP James Sells recorded the final out.
The 15 total strikeouts delivered by the MTSU staff represents a season-high.
The Skipper Speaks
"The guys responded to yesterday's loss in the right way. We talked last night about leaving it at the stadium as soon as they walked out. If you try to do too much, that is not the right response. If you try to make up for it, that is not the right response. You just have to be ready to go and keep trying to do what we've done all year. At times we've put pressure on opposing teams by just being consistent at bat after at bat. We set the tone on the mound and had some really good at bats," said head coach Jerry Meyers.
On Swan's outing: "It was huge. Once he came out and was dominant through the first five or six hitters that he faced, we started thinking about letting him finish it. Sells was very close to being hot, so we made that move."
Player Perspective – 1B DJ Wright
"I've been looking fastball, and I'm surprised I've swung at as many off speed pitches as I have. [My mindset has been] to go out there and hit the ball, if I get out I get out. I'm not really looking at the negatives.
