MTSU heading to Iowa for Three Matches

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The Middle Tennessee volleyball team is on its way to the Fryfest Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa. The Blue Raiders will face Iowa at 6 p.m. CT on Friday, South Dakota State at 3 p.m. CT on Saturday and Kent State at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday. Bellarmine at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. The Iowa match will be streamed on Big Ten Plus behind a paywalll, while the other two matches you will have to follow along using live stats.
Last week, the Blue Raiders battled and fell short in their two matches to kick off the season. Junior Laure Jansen took home Big Orange Bash All-Tournament Team honors as well as Tennessee Sports Writer's Association Player of the Week.
Scouting the Iowa Hawkeyes
Iowa (1-2, 0-0 B1G) started their new season with a win against Cal Poly followed by two losses against Sacramento State and Nevada. Last year, the Hawkeyes finished 10-21, defeating fellow CUSA member in FIU 3-1. The team returns nine players from last season. Iowa added six freshmen and three transfers.
On offense, the Hawkeyes are led in kills by Caitlan Buettner. The On offense, the Pilots are led in kills by senior Jayme Scott. The 6-2 outside hitter has 40 kills on a .178 attack percentage through three matches. Senior Delaney Mcsweeney with 28 kills on a .254 attack percentage.
On defense, Buettner leads the team with 48 digs and 4.0 digs per set. Redshirt-junior Anna Jones is averaging 1.08 blocks per set.
This is the first meeting between MTSU and Iowa.
Scouting the South Dakota State Jackrabbits
South Dakota State (1-2, 0-0 SUMMIT) picked up their first win of the season against Winthrop. The two losses came against Green Bay and Wyoming. Last season, the Jackrabbits ended the season 18-15 including a loss from fellow CUSA member Jacksonville State 0-3. The squad returns eight from last year. The Jackrabbits added six freshmen and one transfer.
On offense, South Dakota State is led in kills by sophomore Katie Van Egdom with 41 kills on .315 attack percentage. Not too far behind is freshmen Sylvie Zgonc with 35 kills on .264 attack percentage.
On defense, three Jackrabbits average one or more blocks per set in Brogran Beck, Sydni Schetan and Anna Ventling-Brown. Stella Winterfield leads the team 39 digs earning 3.55 digs per set.
This will be the second meeting between MTSU and South Dakota State. The Blue Raiders lead the series 1-0 winning in 2008.
Scouting the Kent State Golden Flashes
Kent State (0-3, 0-0 MAC) have yet to record a win this season. Their three matches were against Butler, UC San Diego and Fresno State. Last year, the Golden Flashes finished the season 13-16. This Kent State is full of newcomers as they have added five transfers and four freshmen. Only three returners from last year return for the Golden Flash.
On offense, sophomore Mackenzie McGuire leads the team with 40 kills on .132 attack percentage. Sophomore Kendall White has 80 assists.
On defense, senior Bryn Roberts leads the squad with 57 digs. Redshirt-senior Kiana Mack earns 0.73 blocks per set.
Last meeting between the MTSU and Kent State was in 1995. The Blue Raiders lead the series 1-0.

Blue Raider Notes
- Junior Laure Jansen earned all-tournament honors for her play last weekend as well as Tennessee Sports Writer Association Player of the Week.
- Sophomore Adri Rhoda led the team with 25 kills and 3.13 kills per set. Rhoda also lead the team with most points in earning 34 points.
- Senior Taylor Eisert finished the weekend with 93 assists tallying 11.63 assists per set. Eisert ranks third with 2,456 career assists, needing 416 more assists to tie the current 25-point era program record for assists in a career at 2,872.
- Jansen was outstanding at the Big Orange Bash on both sides of the ball. She finished the weekend with 23 kills on a .278 attack percentage and 22 digs. The Netherland native earned 2.25 digs per set.
- Jansen hit home three more service aces last weekend, putting her at 100 in her career.
- Senior Taylor Eisert finished the weekend with 93 assists tallying 11.63 assists per set. Eisert ranks third with 2,456 career assists, needing 416 more assists to tie the current 25-point era program record for assists in a career at 2,872.
- Rhoda has 75 service aces needing 28 more to reach 100 career service aces. The program record is 116 held by Marley Banton.
