MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Shu Matsuoka earned Conference USA Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday.
"Shu has made some major improvements to his game," said MTSU Head Coach Jimmy Borendame. "We told him he needed a year of development and he put his head down and worked. The great part is he still has room to improve. He is just scratching the surface of what he can do. I'm so proud of him and his growth so far but we will keep pushing him."
Matsuoka had a perfect weekend against (rv) Oklahoma State and Arkansas going 4-0 in the two matches. In the first match, Matsuoka teamed up with Karim Al-Amin to take down Oklahoma State's Isaac Becroft and Eric Schiessl 6-3 on court No. 2. In singles, the sophomore earned a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Alessio Basile on court No. 4.
In the second match, Matsuoka was partnered with Al-Amin again and they defeated Arkansas' Alan Sau Franco and Karlo Kajin 6-1 on court No. 2. To cap off the undefeated weekend, the Tokyo, Japan native tallied a 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5), 6-3 win against Stefanos Savva on court No. 4.
