MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee women's soccer team (7-7-0, 4-2-0 CUSA) closed out its three-match homestand tonight with a 2-0 shutout win over the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (3-7-3, 1-2-3 CUSA) in an alumni day matchup at Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium.
The win tonight over the Hilltoppers improves the Blue Raiders to 4-2 in conference play, with just three weeks remaining until the start of the Conference USA Tournament on Nov. 4 in Miami, Fla.
The opening 25 minutes of the match were relatively quiet in terms of scoring opportunities with no shots on goal that would test either goalkeeper. That was until the 27th minute when Middle Tennessee star midfielder Manon Lebargy, coming off an assist from Risui Arasaki, broke through the WKU defense and scoring her 10th goal of the season.
Just five minutes later Arasaki would test goalkeeper Maddie Davis once more, as the Hilltoppers' shot stopper was forced into her first save of the night.
The opening 45 minutes would come and go with the Blue Raiders leading 1-0, the ninth match in which MTSU has controlled a halftime lead.
Idun Kvaale, who has seen an incredible run of form during this homestand, recorded her first scoring opportunities of the match with a pair of shots on goal, both of which were saved by Davis.
In the 52nd minute, freshman Lexi Dendis scored off her own rebound on the near side of the net to double the home advantage, improving her 2024 goal tally to four.
Western Kentucky would create multiple scoring chances down the stretch of the second half, forcing goalkeeper Demi Gronauer into her third and fourth saves of the night, holding the scoreline at 2-0.
The Blue Raiders would see out a 2-0 result in their penultimate match at Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium of the 2024 season, earning three points over WKU for the first time since 2017.
