MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Following an unbeaten three-match homestand, the Middle Tennessee women's soccer team (7-7-0, 4-2-0 CUSA) is set to begin a two-match road stretch with a meeting with the Sam Houston Bearkats (6-6-2, 3-3-0 CUSA) in Huntsville, Texas on Sunday.
History vs. Sam Houston
The Blue Raiders have faced Sam Houston once in their program's history with the Bearkats joining Conference USA prior to the start of the 2023 season. In the two teams' lone meeting, Sam Houston collected all three points over Middle Tennessee in a 3-2 win in Murfreesboro.
About Middle Tennessee
MTSU enters the fifth week of Conference USA play with a three-match winning streak, including wins at home over Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State and Western Kentucky.
The Blue Raiders currently sit in third place in the CUSA ranks, just three points behind FIU at the top of the table.
With the win over the Hilltoppers on Oct. 13, the Blue Raiders improved to 4-2 in conference play, with just over two weeks remaining until the start of the Conference USA Tournament on Nov. 4 in
Miami, Fla.
The opening 25 minutes of the match were relatively quiet in terms of scoring opportunities with no shots on goal that would test either goalkeeper. That was until the 27th minute when Middle
Tennessee star midfielder Manon Lebargy, coming off an assist from Risui Arasaki, broke through the WKU defense and scoring her 10th goal of the season.
Just five minutes later Arasaki would test goalkeeper Maddie Davis once more, as the Hilltoppers' shot stopper was forced into her first save of the night.
The opening 45 minutes would come and go with the Blue Raiders leading 1-0, the ninth match in which MTSU has controlled a halftime lead.
Idun Kvaale, who saw an incredible run of form during the homestand, recorded her first scoring opportunities of the match with a pair of shots on goal, both of which were saved by Davis.
In the 52nd minute, freshman Lexi Dendis scored off her own rebound on the near side of the net to double the home advantage, improving her 2024 goal tally to four.
Western Kentucky would create multiple scoring chances down the stretch of the second half, forcing goalkeeper Demi Gronauer into her third and fourth saves of the night, holding the scoreline at 2-0.
The Blue Raiders would see out a 2-0 result in their penultimate match at Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium of the 2024 season, earning three points over WKU for the first time since 2017.
Middle Tennessee took down Western Kentucky tonight with two goals on 22 total attempts, doubling the Hilltoppers' total, including 10 on frame. Lebargy got into double figures tonight in the scoring department, keeping her share of second in the Conference USA ranks.
The Blue Raider defense held strong again tonight for their fourth clean sheet of the season, and their third in the last five games.
