Blue Raiders’ Win Streak Ends at Three, Fall 2-1 at Sam Houston

HUNTSVILLE, Texas –The Middle Tennessee women's soccer team (7-8-0, 4-3-0 CUSA) fell 2-1 to the Sam Houston Bearkats (7-6-2, 4-3-0 CUSA) today on the road in Huntsville, Texas after a heartbreaking goal in the 87th minute to snap their three-match winning streak.
Middle Tennessee drops to fifth in the Conference USA table following the loss to Sam Houston with the Blue Raiders remaining just two points behind second-placed Liberty. The two programs will face each other on Sunday, Oct. 27 in Lynchburg.
Early in the match, Sam Houston's offense required MTSU goalkeeper Demi Gronauer into a pair of saves in the opening six minutes to keep the scoreline level at 0-0. In the ninth minute, the
Bearkats would break though for the first goal of the match by Landri Townsend, her sixth of the year, to give the home side an early 1-0 advantage.
Nearly 20 minutes would go by prior to the next scoring opportunity, but with it would the Blue Raiders' equalizer, as junior forward Taijah Fraser would level the score at one in the 28th minute.
Both sides would see out a 1-1 scoreline into the halftime break following a pair of off-target attempts from Sam Houston.
The second half of play was relatively quiet in the scoring department until the 65th minute. Sam Houston forward Jasmine Dybala was saved by Gronauer in the middle of the net, keeping the score level at one.
Gronauer and the Middle Tennessee backline would continue to come up big down the stretch of the match, as the Bearkats amped up the pressure on their offensive end. The Blue Raiders shot stopper made two more saves in the 73rd and 80th minutes, her fourth and fifth saves of the day.
Following consistent high-line pressure in the second half, Sam Houston would break through the Middle Tennessee defense to take a 2-1 lead in 87th minute with a goal from Jasmine Marquez.
The full-time whistle would blow with Sam Houston collecting all three points at home and the Blue Raiders unable to claim their first draw of the 2024 season.

Middle Tennessee ended the match with one goal on six total attempts, including two on frame. Fraser featured as the goalscorer for the Blue Raiders for the second time this season. Dendis recorded her fourth assist of the year of that goal, to go with one shot in 82 minutes of game time. Six Blue Raiders logged the full 90 minutes today in Gronauer, defenders Sadie Sterbenz, Emma Brown, Sascha Nielsen and Lauren Spaanstra and Manon Lebargy.
