KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee women's golf program had a fantastic front nine at the opening round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Sunday but struggled on the back nine of the Cherokee Country Club. The Blue Raiders finished the first round in seventh, shooting 295 (+11).
Kendall Maynard led the team on day one, shooting her fourth one-under-par of the season. With the round below par, she moved into a tie for the team lead with four rounds at par or better. The senior had a fantastic front nine, shooting two birdies and the rest at par to go out at 33. The back nine proved to be a bit more difficult, but Maynard tallied another two birdies to finish out the day one below par and tied for second overall.
Abbie Lee followed up Maynard, sitting tied for 28th place. She shot a clean first nine, carding a birdie and a 34 going out. The back nine proved to be a challenge once again, with the senior shooting two bogeys and a double to wrap up the day at 74 (+3).
Hole 18 continued to push the Blue Raiders, with Nicole Johnson, triple bogeying the final hole of the day. Despite that setback, she finished the first nine holes at par and birdied hole 10. The final eight holes of the day were difficult, but the sophomore completed round one at T34, shooting a 75 (+4).
Lanie Campbell and Ella Manley both shot a 76 (+5) on the day, with Campbell tallying four birdies and Manley dropping in two.
On the individual side, Jillian Bowman completed her first round of the tournament at 78 (+9) to finish at T55. She stayed away from big numbers everywhere except hole 18 and dropped in a birdie on hole 11.
