Softball drops two tight games in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Middle Tennessee softball (0-4) dropped both games on Saturday with a 4-3 loss to Cal Poly and an 5-4 loss to Sacramento State in day two of the NorCal Kickoff.
Game 1 – MTSU 3, Cal Poly 4
The Blue Raiders struck first after back-to-back hits to start the game and a well-executed first and third play to score the first run. Cal Poly answered with a run of their own to tie the game. After two scoreless innings, the Mustangs gained back the lead with two runs in the fourth.
Ava Brooks and Shelby Echols both delivered an RBI in the seventh to even the score at three. Ashlee Jacoway picked up her first hit of the season that started the seventh inning rally.
Cal Poly won in extra innings after a sac-fly scored the winning run.
Mary Martinez started the game in the circle and threw three innings with 2 strikeouts giving up one earned run. Jesyne Espinal took over in the fourth and pitched 3 innings as well. Kamryn Carcich came in for 1.2 innings.
Game 2 – MTSU 4, Sacramento State 5
MTSU trailed from the start after a two-run first inning from Sac State followed by a two-run second inning. Both teams went scoreless for two innings before the Blue Raiders got on the board in fifth. Amaya Harris drew a walk and stole second where she would come around to score on an infield hit by Brooks.
In the sixth inning, MTSU tied the game with three runs off RBI from Echols and Amaya Harris.
The Hornets would walk the game off with a run in the seventh.
Carcich went the distance throwing 6.1 innings on nine hits and three earned runs.
By the Numbers
· 4 – Shelby Echols extends her hitting streak to four games.
· 12 – Runners left on base in game two vs. Sacramento State
