MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee softball (19-27, 5-13) won its midweek matchup with Tennessee State (20-18, 11-7) on Wednesday.
Lexi Medlock delivered the 42nd home run of the season by the Blue Raiders to set the new single-season home run record. The previous record of 41 homers was set in 2012.
"I couldn't have broke the record without all my teammates who hit home runs this year too. It was a total team effort," said Medlock. "It was a really cool experience because I used to be a slapper and Coach Brentz made me into a hitter this year."
Kamryn Carcich started in the circle on Wednesday night and picked up two early strikeouts. She is up to 66 on the year for the fifth most in Conference USA this season.
MTSU plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the first after Ansley Blevins singled off the wall and advanced Amaya Harris to third. A well-executed first and third play allowed Harris to score and give the Blue Raiders an early lead.
Carcich would come out in the second inning and add two more strikeouts. A scoreless second inning for both sides would keep MTSU in front by a run.
The Blue Raiders scored three runs in the third inning to stretch the lead.
Shelby Echols got her second hit of the game and 50th of the season to lead off the bottom of the third for the Blue Raiders. Her 50 hits leads Conference USA this season.
Harris would follow with a double and come around to score on a RBI sacrifice fly from Blevins that increased the lead 2-0.
The single-season home run record at MTSU would be broken on a two-run homer by Lexi Medlock for the teams 42nd of the season.
Tennessee State would quickly get a run back in the fourth on a solo home run.
Once again Echols led off with a hit for her third of the game, this time a double. She would come in for her second run scored of the game.
The Tigers would add another run in the seventh, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
Mary Martinez came in to get the save in the seventh inning and give MTSU the 5-2 victory.
